How do you force quit an unresponsive VLC application on a Debian 9 operating system?

You kill the application by first finding what PID (Process Identifier) it's currently running on with the ps aux | grep vlc command. And then you can use the sudo kill -9 PID command to kill the application.

The first step is to open a new terminal window (CTRL+ALT+T).

Then, we need to get the process id VLC is currently running on. You can get that information with this command:

      ps aux | grep vlc

This will output info on any of the processes currently running VLC on your machine. The output will look similar to this:

      username    20296 0.2 0.3 1243700 63276 ?      Sl   19:51   0:00 /usr/bin/vlc --started-from-file

The first number (20296 in the example output above) is the PID that we need for our next command to kill the process.

Here is the command to kill the VLC application using the PID (replace PID with the one found in the previous command):

      sudo kill -9 PID

That will completely kill your VLC application on that process.

You now know how to kill a VLC application on a Debian 9 machine.
